Inspired by Iceland? These Trefoil Guild members certainly were!

It was Monday 4th March when Venture Abroad’s Norman waved goodbye to 20 members of the Trefoil Guild as they boarded their flight at London Heathrow – the destination; Iceland! The next 6 days were to be filled with spectacular sights in this unpolluted and truly captivating country including boiling mud pools, shooting geysers, waterfalls, volcanoes, mighty rivers, stunning coastlines and much more – all fingers were crossed for an appearance of the Northern Lights! And, of course, as with any good trip, there would also be plenty of time for coffee and sampling the local baked delights!

2013 marks the third time that Venture Abroad has offered Trefoil Guild members the opportunity to experience the wonders of Iceland and the itinerary for this year’s tour was as varied as ever. Iceland is a country with vast quantities of natural, raw beauty and to develop an itinerary is never a challenge in terms of finding enough places to visit and experience – it’s what to miss out that is the problem! Luckily for the ladies, they were in the very capable hands of their Venture Abroad tour guide, Ian Hardie, who’s knowledge of all things Icelandic is second to none – well he does spend half of his year living in Iceland!

"But in the true spirit of Guiding the ladies weren’t about to let a little bad weather hinder them!"

As the ladies enjoyed a comprehensive itinerary taking in some of the most spectacular landscapes of Iceland, Ian kept all of us back at home up-to-date with the highlights as they happened via our online diary. This can still be read in full on the Venture Abroad blog.

The weather certainly tested the ladies from the very start, as, on arrival day, temperatures fell well below zero and strong winds swept across the whole of Iceland. But in the true spirit of Guiding the ladies weren’t about to let a little bad weather hinder them! Their (bad? good?) luck with the weather continued, as snow gripped the nation on Wednesday morning brining even the stalwart locals to a stand-still. Once again the Guiding spirit prevailed as the group saw it as an opportunity and after a morning ‘defrosting’ the ladies (and Ian) set off to explore. It turned out that they were the only coach to reach both Geysir and Gullfoss that day. What a fantastic and unspoilt sight!

Once the group were firmly back on UK soil we asked them to give us their highlights of the trip and here are just a few of the responses:

“Wonderful scenery, an enthusiastic, informative courier and many "wow" factors made this a holiday I will remember for a long time. The best moment was from when I landed at Keflavik airport until the return flight home!” Mary Milne

“Brilliant, awe-inspiring, windy; an experience not to be missed! Swimming in the Blue Lagoon was awesome, but the waterfalls, museums and 'stories' told by Ian were all great.” Margaret McColm

“An excellent experience, gained a lot of local knowledge about the Icelanders and their country whose geography and geology is unique to other countries. Each day was different.” Esther Moore

We thought it only fair to give the final words to Angela Owens as we share with you an excerpt from the poem she wrote as a parting gift to the group. The full ‘ditty’ can be found on the Venture Abroad Blogs,

“We sang songs and we chatted as we travelled around
We even taught Ian how to silence a crowd!
More snowy white waterfalls, a geyser, a crater,
once more Ian filled us with Geographical data

His fabulous account of the volcanic eruption,
Had us spellbound—in seats, no interruption
‘bout farmers and livestock and the people affected
He told us the facts from an Icelandic perspective.”

Overall ratings taken from the post-tour questionnaires:
Overall tour experience: 4.9 out of 5
Accommodation: 4.6 out of 5
Pre-departure customer service: 4.8 out of 5
Tour Courier: 4.9 out of 5
100% would recommend Venture Abroad to a fellow Trefoil Guild member!

So, where to next? There were votes for Morocco, but who knows? Pre-register for the 2014 Trefoil Guild Holiday Brochure coming in June 2013 to find out what’s in store!
