Belgium - De Kluis

Looking for a perfect way to introduce your Guide group to Europe? Look no further! This close-to-home centre offers activities aplenty with the added benefit of quick and easy transport links into Bruges, Brussels or Ypres, so you can discover more of Belgium!

Located on the edge of the Meerdaal Forest, De Kluis will be your gateway to Belgium and beyond. Perfect for the adventurous, De Kluis offers a superb range of on-site activities to keep your group entertained from morning to night. From exciting activities to cultural excursions, a trip to De Kluis is the perfect summer adventure and with 35 hectares of forest at your feet, it’s back to nature we go!

As 2014 saw the country come together to mark the start of a four year programme to commemorate the WWI Centenary, a particularly memorable experience for many groups travelling to Belgium is the opportunity to take part in the ongoing commemorations. Your group can experience this poignant moment in history as they visit the WWI battlefields, walk through the reconstructed trenches and lay a wreath at the Last Post Ceremony in Ypres.

The operation of this tour is subject to minimum and maximum participant numbers. Your booking is accepted on this basis. In the event that the total number of paying participants falls below the minimum number (including as a result of cancellation), we reserve the right to adjust the price payable by each participant accordingly or to cancel your booking and the tour/departure date. If any adjusted price is not accepted by you or a sufficient number of participants or we have to cancel the tour in these circumstances, you will receive a full refund of all monies paid to us (other than any amendment or cancellation charges which have already been incurred). No compensation will be payable in addition.

A WWI Battlefields Experience!

WWI Centenary Logo

2014–2018 marks the centenary of WWI, meaning your group can enjoy a trip to Belgium with a unique educational edge. As well as visiting the historic battlefields and memorials of Ypres and the Somme, there is the opportunity to take part in remembrance ceremonies and walk the reconstructed trenches at the newly refurbished Passchendaele Experience.

Sample Itinerary

This sample of tour days in Belgium is provided as an example only, as inspiration for your discussions with your group.

Day 1: The excitement begins as soon as you set off for Belgium and, after arriving in Calais, there's not long to go until you're settling into camp. Get to know your surroundings quickly as you attempt the onsite orienteering course and meet your VA Rep.

Day 2: Take the train from Sint-Joris-Weert to the nearby university town of Leuven and visit the Scout Museum which is only open on Sundays. Leuven is a beautiful town with an extremely well maintained town centre. Admire the impressive gothic Town Hall (which houses the information bureau) and St. Peters Church which are both located in the Great Market Square, and wander along the many narrow streets, packed with shops, bars, cafes and restaurants. Spend the afternoon at the indoor climbing and caving centre, bowling centre or swimming pool. (Minimum age: 17 yrs).

Day 3: Spend a day exploring the activities on site and try your hand at the Adventure Ropes Course and BMX course.

Adventure Ropes Course
Teamwork is the key to a successful session high up in the tree tops at De Kluis Scout Centre. Your group will be shown the ropes by a qualified instructor before heading onto the course where the adventure begins. There are a number of different parts to the tree top course, each posing an exciting challenge! All necessary equipment is provided and instructors speak good English.

Guided BMX course
Take part in a brand new activity on site. Follow your guide through the forested area at De Kluis and enjoy the thrills and spills of the exhilarating track. All necessary equipment is provided and instructors speak good English.

Day 4: Take the train or bus to the beautiful city of Bruges, where you can visit the diamond museum or taste some of the famous Belgian chocolate at Choco-Story. After shopping, gaze with awe at the stunning architecture on a canal cruise, or being guided through the city by bike, stay in town for your evening meal.

Day 5: De Kluis is set in 20 acres of forest with plenty of hiking trails from the site. Why not hire mountain bikes and discover the surrounding area on two wheels or don your boots and go by foot. There is a total of 30 km of bike trails round the site that will keep the fittest of you occupied. You can obtain maps of the area from reception for free.

Day 6: Pay your respects today to those who fought in World War One as you visit the battlefields and memorials of Ypres. This is an emotional visit which can be combined with a trip to the Menin Gate in Ypres to witness the Last Post Ceremony which has been held at 8.00pm, every evening since the end of the war.

Day 7: Visit a Belgian theme park – either Brupark or Walibi.

Day 8: Say goodbye to your camp as you pack up and head home.
