Goodbye Buitenzorg!

22 Aug 17

The season has come to an end and everything is packed up at Buitenzorg. It is time for me to say goodbye to Baarn, Buitenzorg and the Netherlands.

It has been a fun filled season with lots of different groups and activities! From going to Ypres with the Potteries North District Scouts to going on all the rides at Walibi with the Stoke Climsland Scouts! All 5 groups have been great fun and  have seen the best of what the Netherlands has to offer.

For me, it has been nice to meet to so many people from all over the UK and show them one of my favourite countries. I have been made an honorary scout twice (!!!) and have learned things about the Netherlands and the UK that I never expected to. Hopefully everyone that visited has had a real taste of what the Netherlands is all about; from clogs, to stroopwaffles, to dutch pancakes, to windmills.

I hope everyone enjoys the rest of their summers. Until next time, tot ziens!

Last days for Worthing Sea Scouts

20 Aug 17

As the week drew to a close, Worthing Sea Scouts spent their last full day heading into Amersfoort to do the High Ropes course and Swimming. Although it rained (heavily) and everyone got drenched on the high ropes, they were able to splash around in the pool after so it didn’t have too much of an effect!!

After a soggy end to the week, the Scouts managed to get all packed up and onto the bus.

It was sad to wave the last group off…now the packing up of the camp site has commenced!!

Worthing – Making it worth every minute

17 Aug 17

Following a busy day in Utrecht on Monday; Worthing Sea Scouts took it slow on Tuesday biking around the local area and discovered the Netherlands in the Dutch way.

On Tuesday, the Scouts took on Amsterdam, they visited the Rijksmuseum; the NEMO science museum and then enjoyed a cruise along Amsterdam’s famous canals.

To finish the day, the Scouts had a sunset dinner at Butchers Burgers and enjoyed the Dutch tradition of al fresco dining.

Today, after a sleepy start, the Scouts spent the day on site to take part in laser tag and archery. It was a fun filled day of activity, broken up by use of the on site pizza oven (which was a challenge for everyone!!).

Sunshine and Showers for Worthing Scouts

15 Aug 17

As the final week of the season gets into full swing, there has been a great mix of weather from glorious sunshine yesterday to it pouring with rain today.

On Sunday, the Scouts ventured out to Utrecht where they climbed the Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in The Netherlands! The group then had some time to explore the city themselves (a few of whom found a rare McDonald’s).

On Monday, the group took part in the infamous Photo Hike – some groups only took 1hr45, the quickest time this season!!! In the afternoon, they played Mini-Golf (or Midget Golf in Dutch) before cooling off in the Swimming Pool.

Today, I have sent the Scouts off on a bike ride. As one of the nations favourite past times, I have my fingers crossed that it’ll stop raining enough for them to enjoy this!

Roller coaster of a week

12 Aug 17

This week with Potteries North has been somewhat of a roller coaster; the emotional visit to Ypres, to the quieter day with a photo hike finishing with actual roller coasters at Walibi Theme Park.

Friday morning, we set off early for Walibi and it did not disappoint! With many of the group going on the famous Goliath ride, as well as lots opting to get wet on the log flume. After the busy day at the theme park, the group visited a restaurant in Baarn for Build Your Own Burgers to celebrate a lovely week. A brilliant week with lots of happy faces at the end.

This afternoon, of course, we had to say goodbye to Potteries North and a hello to Worthing Sea Scouts. They have already settled in and even did some Geocaching on site this afternoon! It looks to be another busy week…

Potteries North Take on Amsterdam

10 Aug 17

Potteries North District Scouts continue to be busy! Yesterday, they recovered from their day trip to Ypres while some of them still managed to take a self-guided trip to Amsterdam, others visited nearby Amersfoort and Baarn.

Today, the whole group (fully rested) made it to Amsterdam where they had an emotional visit to the Anne Frank House, many of the group buying copies of her diary to further read up on her life. In the afternoon, the Potteries North enjoyed a canal cruise through the famous Amsterdam Canals. Upon returning to the campsite, the Scouts enjoyed Domino’s pizza which was delicious!
