On Monday, 1st Warley Scouts went to Ypres for a Battlefields Tour. It started with a visit to the In Flanders Fields Museum where the scouts really enjoying entering their surname into the computers and finding soldiers with the same names as them, I think some of them will be going home to start looking up their family tree! Next, we went to Sanctuary Wood where the Scouts got to move around some trenches and explore the reality of what life was like in the War. Following this, we went to Tyne Cot Cemetery, which was very moving, as you moved around this very quiet and beautifully kept cemetery; you could see just how many graves there were, and how many people on the panels who didn’t have graves.  We then headed back to the centre of Ypres where we enjoyed a very large meal at T’Zeerd Restaurant! Finally we went  to the Menin Gate where 3 Scouts, 2 Explorers and 1 Adult laid 2 Poppy Wreaths on behalf of the group. The other members of the group and myself got to stand a a Guard Of Honour under the gate, and got to watch a truly amazing Last Post Ceremony, where a Welsh Choir sang. We met Scouts from Wales and Australia, as well  as members of the public who all complimented the group on their behaviour and attitude during the Ceremony. Great job 1st Warley Scouts. On the way home, all the Scouts had a sing song on the coach, to the driver’s 70s CD, which topped off a really great day.

Yesterday, the Scouts went on the Advenutre Ropes course, at De Kluis, lots of them faced their fear of heights and did an awesome job crossing the rope course. It was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone! After this, we went on a hike to Zoet Water and their we went on a Smurf hunt! Some leaders had conveniently hidden some Smurfs in the bushes, near the toadstool that sits on an island on one of the lakes, and the Scouts really enjoyed the adventure! This meant we got the chance to explore the forest where the campsite is situated and fully appreciate how beautiful it is!
