A group of 28 members of the Trefoil Guild from across the UK have recently returned from an exciting 7-night trip to the beautiful mountainous region of Adelboden, Switzerland. For some of the members, it was a first-time trip with Venture Abroad; for others, it was another exciting adventure to add to their Venture Abroad list! For all of the members, it was the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with old friends and new in a beautiful setting.

With stunning views of the surrounding mountainous landscapes of the Berner Oberland, the Trefoil ladies stayed at The Hotel Alpina which served as the perfect base for their Adelboden adventure.

Trefoil member, Janet Linney of West Bromwich Trefoil Guild, was particularly enamoured by the picturesque scenery of this part of Switzerland: ‘The highlight of the tour was on the first morning, when I looked out of the bedroom window to see the low cloud had disappeared, revealing a spectacular view of snow topped mountains, waterfalls and lush green fields. I never tired of that view’.

Accompanied by Venture Abroad representative, Sophie Cushway, the Trefoil members spent their first day in Adelboden exploring the remarkable Choleren Gorge, where the waters of the Tschentbach pour into a deeply-carved rocky gully. Following this waterfall spectacle, the ladies visited the local woodcarver’s workshop and purchased authentic woggles, badges and hand-crafted souvenirs to mark their Swiss adventure.

A highlight for many of the ladies was the day visit to the treasured WAGGGS World Centre, Our Chalet. For many years, Our Chalet has held a special significance for the Trefoil Guild, resonating with many of its members as an important community space, bringing together Trefoil and Guiding members from all over the world.

In the evening, some of the ladies took part in an international evening with other Trefoil members from the USA, and prepared a presentation about their home country to share with the rest of the group. The participants thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to socialise with international members of the Trefoil Guild and it was, for many of the ladies, a truly memorable evening. Trefoil member, Rosemary Smith of 2nd Winchester Trefoil Guild, commented: ‘I found it all very moving’.

‘Well organised, informative, varied and thoroughly enjoyable’

The next stop was Brienz, a charming village at the foot of the Brienzer Rothorn Mountain on the northern shore of the turquoise waters of Lake Brienz. Here, the group visited Ballenberg Open Air Museum, soaking up the history of Switzerland as they wandered through hundreds of original, century-old houses and gardens.

The following day, the ladies travelled to the peak of Schynige Platte by cogwheel railway to admire the colourful autumn blooms of the unique Botanical Gardens and to witness the impressive mountain backdrop of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

During their final days in Adelboden, the group enjoyed a guided walking tour of the historical city of Bern, visited the UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site of the Old Town and travelled to the quaint town of Interlaken, enjoying spectacular views of the lake and valley – a perfect way to round off an extraordinary week in Adelboden.

Tour Consultant, Colette Davy, was thrilled that the trip was such a success:

I am delighted to have had the chance to arrange another tour to Adelboden for members of the Trefoil Guild. Eighteen months in the planning and now it’s all over, but I hope that everyone has some wonderful memories from the trip! It’s been a pleasure putting the tour arrangements in place and great that so many Trefoil Guild members could share this tour experience to discover the delights of the Berner Oberland! ‘.

Venture Abroad has been organising trips to Adelboden for 40 years and, as one of their most popular destinations, they look forward to helping more groups experience this Swiss sanctuary and enjoy its awe-inspiring landscapes for many years to come.

With exciting plans for 2016, including the Annual Trefoil Meeting in Harrogate and trips to Malta and India, Venture Abroad look forward to another year of exciting trips with Trefoil Guild members and hope to see some familiar faces in 2016!
