Throughout the summer months, Venture Abroad will be helping Scouts and Guides from across the UK to make their international adventures come true, with holidays to Buitenzorg Scout Centre in The Netherlands.
We hear from Venture Abroad Representative, Abi, who headed out to The Netherlands earlier this week to set up camp and make preparations for the first groups arriving.
Kickstarting the adventure!
I arrived in Baarn on Tuesday afternoon ready and raring to kickstart my VA Rep adventure. The first thing on my list was to familiarise myself with this beautiful town, after all this would be my home for the next month.
What better way to do this than by bike?! I cycled around the small streets taking in the surroundings, including the very large mansions! I constantly have to remind myself that we ride on the right in Holland… safe to say I found this out the hard way!
‘Hallo’ Buitenzorg Scout Centre
On my ride I popped into the Buitenzorg Scout Centre to say ‘hallo’. I was shown around by one of the wonderful camp staff members and quickly familiarised myself with the camp. Everyone on site is so friendly and always has a big smile on their faces.
Amsterdam – City of bikes
On my second day, I headed off to the capital, Amsterdam. Let’s just say it lives up to its name as ‘City of Bikes’ – they’re everywhere! I had a great day wandering down the canals and taking in the Dutch culture. I also couldn’t resist the opportunity to taste some world-famous Dutch stroop waffles.
A day of exploring
My final day of exploring was a busy one. I started in the nearby town of Amersfoort, which is full of things to do, from the famous zoo to the outdoor swimming pool. From here I headed on to the slightly bigger town of Utrecht, which I have to say, is my personal favourite so far. It’s a perfect example of old meeting new. The town’s modern high street shops are weaved in with the traditional cheese shops, cafes and restaurants along the canals, not forgetting the famous Dom. The canals bring such serenity to the town, which takes away from the hustle and bustle.
I’ve had a fabulous few days getting ready and now can’t wait to meet all the groups and show them what the Netherlands has to offer!
