Gruessi from beautiful Switzerland! It’s Katie from the VA team, and I’m out here with Jade to explore the wonders which this country has to offer.

We arrived yesterday, and had our first taste of Swiss public transport. Clean, efficient and on time – a great start. We were soon in the mountains, and you could feel the temperature dropping as we contained to Frutigen. Here we swapped onto the local bus for Adelboden, together with a group of ladies heading back to Our Chalet – it seems you can never escape Guides! Adelboden was wet and very windy in the night, but we woke to see new snow on the mountains and beautiful blue skies. A good thing, as we had a lot to fit in today!

Our first stop was a visit to the chalets where our groups stay during their tour. We started down in the valley, next to the river at Egghaus 6. We then went up into the mountains and visited the oldest and most traditional of the chalets, Bonderlen 1. It was close to here that we made some new Swiss friends…

We also visited the biggest chalet, Bonderlen 4. It was great to see the chalets again, and we are very jealous of the groups who get to wake up to that view everyday.

As we were so close, we took the opportunity to visit Our Chalet, one of the five WAGGGS World Centres. For me, as a Guide leader myself, it was a very special opportunity to go to this place, which always reminds me of the global family of Guiding. All of the staff were so friendly and so were the guests. They were on a week’s break at the Chalet to get it ready for the summer – and they were doing a brilliant job. Jade enjoyed meeting Skippy, the resident cat, who was very cute but always trying to get up to mischief…

Our last stop of the day was slightly more adventurous – and that was just the journey to get there! In fairness, we made it to the Adventure Park Reharti in one piece and were impressed by the range of high ropes and other climbing activities which are there. A group was in full swing (no pun intended, except for the pendulum swing!)  and it was great to see them having such a good time. So much so that I had to have a go – this girl definitely can!

We are very grateful to FeWo Adelboden, Our Chalet and Alpinschule Adelboden for showing us so much of this wonderful place. We are now sitting in the sunshine with some well deserved Swiss chocolate!

Watch out tomorrow when we are off to the other side of the valley to Kandersteg.
