With the season in full swing in Buitenzorg, let’s look back at the past few weeks at some of the exciting thing our groups have been up to.
Biking in Baarn:
Our groups have been busy exploring far and wide on mountain bikes. The more adrenalin-fuelled groups tried their hand at mountain biking along the many trails around the forests. Some groups took the more relaxed approach and meandered down the cycle paths, stopping off at some of the beautiful castles along the way. This even involved a quick sing-song to the guard at the gate of Castle Drakensteyn!
1st Langford Village Scouts went a bit further afield and ventured into the town of Spakenburg, where they admired the windmills and even had a quick paddle before biking back home. I think all our groups have been surprised at how easy and safe it is to cycle around the Netherlands and it makes exploring new places that little bit easier.
Both the 445th Liverpool Guiding group and the Scouts from Fife and Cupar enjoyed exploring the town of Utrecht. Here they took part in a guided climb of the Dom tower and, despite the heat, managed to reap the benefits at the top. They even learned some history of the tower along the way. After the climb, they had the chance to enjoy some free time in Utrecht, where a range of souvenirs were purchased to take back to England.
Swimming and Smiling
With temperatures reaching a record high last week in the Netherlands, the groups quickly found their way to the Bosbad de Vuursche swimming pool. Luckily, this is situated just over the railway line from Buitenzorg so it was incredibly handy when the groups needed to cool down. Although the pool was busy, our groups still had room to splash around!
Wailing in Walibi:
After speaking to the groups, this was one of their favourite days in Holland. With big roller-coasters all around, this was definitely one for the thrill seekers. Our groups enjoyed getting soaked on “The Blast” and there were plenty of chill-out spots for members who wanted to spectate.
Ambling in Amsterdam
All our groups loved exploring the capital whilst on their trip to Holland. From delving deep into the dungeons, cruising along canals, visiting museums and pancake cruises, our groups have seen it all.
As well as the many day trips, our groups have also enjoyed the activities on offer here at Buitenzorg. Geocaching and the leather workshops were enjoyed by our groups, but the overwhelming favourite has been clog painting. Everyone loved getting creative when painting traditional Dutch clogs. They were also the perfect gift to take home!
